Gurugram metro services suspended after transformer blast triggers city-wide power failure

A major power outage in Gurugram on Friday evening disrupted rapid metro services for nearly an hour, leaving passengers stranded and forcing some commuters to walk along metro tracks. The blackout was triggered after a transformer failure at a substation in Sector 72 led to an electrical fault and fire, officials said.

According to officials, the incident began around 7:50 pm when a 220 KV transformer at the Sector 72 substation developed an oil leakage, which resulted in a blast during breaker operations and subsequent fire. The fault led to a cascading shutdown affecting multiple substations and power supply across several sectors in the city.

The Delhi Metro Rail Corporation said rapid metro services were suspended from 7:50 pm to 8:33 pm due to a power supply failure from the Sector 72 substation of HVPNL, which also feeds parts of the Gurugram metro network. A spokesperson confirmed that train movement remained halted for around 40 to 45 minutes.

A video circulated on social media showed passengers walking along metro tracks after services came to a halt during the outage. The disruption occurred amid high temperatures of around 41 degrees Celsius, adding to commuter distress as passengers were left stranded between stations.

Power supply to several residential and commercial areas was also affected due to the shutdown of multiple substations, including sectors 15, 38, 44, 46, 52, and 56. Officials later said the disruption was caused by thermal heating in the transformer system, and services were restored on Saturday morning.
